VALUE EDUCATION IN SÊRAT MANEKA CARITA AS LITERATURE LEARNING MATERIALS IN THE EFFORTS TO BUILD CHILDREN CHARACTER
Abstract
The globalization era has been eroding people’s identity especially the youth generation. It is
commonly found children who behave less appropriate to the local culture. Ancient manuscript
text is one of authentic sources of knowledge and information since it was created by the writer in
his period. There are various types of text written, a fairy tale is one of those texts implemented as
a media for panggulawenthah or educational purpose. Sêrat Maneka Carita is the example of the
text contained 17 fairy tales produced using Ngoko, type of Javanese Language, by three writers
namely Ki Saradumipa, Kasan Maknawi, and Bin Katib. This text belongs to the collection of
Sastra Lestari Surakarta Foundation contains an education value which is suitable for children’s
teaching material. This study aimed at implementing the education value contained in Sêrat
Maneka Carita as a local literature’s teaching material for children. Library research was used to
collect the data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. Hermeneutic method was utilized to
analyze and interpret the data. The result revealed that the education value in Sêrat Maneka Carita
was effective to be used as a teaching material in building children’s character.
