USING HOT POTATOES PROGRAM FOR READING TEST INSTRUMENT IN ENGLISH TEACHING LEARNING PROCESS

Abstract


Assessment or assignment is a part of the instrument in teaching learning process. It means every
level in teaching learning process there must be assessment or assignment for the students. Teacher
can know or understand the effective or result of their teaching learning process after they have
done the assessment to their students. Then she/she can decide their teaching learning process
success or not. Hot Potatoes is a software program that can give teacher alternative and interactive
in creating test items or assignments. It is an alternative program because most teachers still use
paper based test on doing assignment to their students. In Hot Potatoes, the form of the assignment
can be on the web or offline file. It is also interactively. Students can directly get their result after
doing their work and they can check the correct answer of the assignment. This program consists
of five alternative of test form; J-Quiz, J-Match, J-Cross, J-Cloze and J-Mix. J-Quiz consists of
four basic question types: multiple choice questions, short answer questions, hybrid question and
multi select questions. J-Match can give matching questions or ordering exercises. J-Cross can
give question the form crossword exercises. This can be used to vocabulary test. J-Cloze can
perform cloze test items. And last, J-Mix can perform the mix between J-Quiz and J-Match.This
program, actually, can be applied into four skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Hopefully, this paper only focuses on reading skill. The writer thinks that reading need attention
more because at present day tests or assessments are still focusing on reading skill mostly. By
using Hot Potatoes program, teacher can create tests or assessment for reading skill. Students will
feel interested and challenged in doing their working because this program can give interesting
experience in doing assignment.
