INTEGRATING LOCAL CULTURE TO TEACH ENGLISH FOR EFL STUDENTS

Abstract


This article arised some issues related to integrating local culture in English language teaching. It
focused to describe how the English Language Teacher integrated Local Culture in their classroom
activities and what aspects of Local Culture should be integrated. The research was conducted by
using descriptive qualitatif method. The data was colected through interview, observation and
documentation. The colected data were analyzed by reducing data, displaying data and verification
or making conclusion. The finding showed that integrating local culture in English classroom
activities done by the teacher in the form of inserting the content of local culture into reading text,
some exercises, and some tasks. Then some aspects of local culture should be integrated in the
English material are the internal and the external aspects of culture. The internal aspects involves
the meaning and values of the story and the character. Meanwhile, the external aspects are the
behavior of people who are indigenous and literature which include stories, dance , musical
instruments and artifacts. They have to be integrated simultaneously.
